Chapter 4

While Alexis and I were waiting in the airport lounge, Ambrose called me. I didn''t answer, so he dialed Alexis'' smartwatch instead.

Alexis instinctively picked up and called out, "Daddy."

On the other end, Ambrose''s furious roar came through immediately. "Do you still remember me? Where are you and Giselle? It''s so late, and you''re still not home. Giselle, do you want to get fired?"

Alexis pursed her lips, gripping her plane ticket tightly as she looked up at me. "You love Maryanne so much, so why do you even care about us?"

"How many times do I have to tell you that Maryanne is your real mother? If you call me ''Daddy'', then you have to call her ''Mommy'' too! Don''t let that scheming nanny mislead you. She has nothing to do with you!

"Alexis, as long as you behave, tell Giselle you''re willing to accept Maryanne as your mother, and convince her to transfer your family register, I promise I''ll get better and remember everything soon."

Ambrose''s initial rage was now tinged with manipulation.

Alexis had always loved spending time with both her parents. Ambrose knew that; this must be his latest tactic to control her.

Just thinking about how he used business negotiation tactics on Alexis made my heart sink uncontrollably.

In the past, I''d been so wrong to think that I could spend my life with a man like this.

Seeing my expression darken, Alexis softly called out, "Mommy."

The moment Ambrose heard that, he immediately hung up. He knew Alexis'' smartwatch had an external speaker and wasn''t private. He must have realized that I''d heard everything and was probably panicking right now.

But it had nothing to do with me anymore. From the moment I''d discovered his memory loss was a lie, I''d stopped caring about him.

He started calling my phone frantically. I didn''t answer, so he switched to texting.

"Giselle, why aren''t you picking up your employer''s call? Do you want your salary to get docked?"

"Where did you take my daughter? Bring her back now, or I''ll call the police!"

"I know you''ve taken great care of Alexis and love her, but no matter what, she''s Maryanne''s and my child."

"Pick up the phone. Where are you?"

"Why aren''t you back yet? What are you two doing?"

I let out a quiet laugh, stood up with Alexis in my arms, and walked toward the boarding gate with the crowd.

I snapped a photo casually and sent it to Ambrose. "We''re leaving. Goodbye forever."

Then, I turned off my phone, removed the SIM card, and tossed it onto the floor. From now on, we would never cross paths again.

Before I''d married Ambrose, I''d already built my own business overseas. Even though he''d grown increasingly devoted to me over the years, I''d never abandoned my little venture.

Alexis had always been curious about my winery and had always begged to visit, but I''d never taken her because Ambrose couldn''t bear to be apart from us.

Now, I wanted to take her home—a home without lies and betrayal from those closest to us.

The boarding line was long. Alexis clung to my neck, looking around in boredom.

Suddenly, she let out a startled gasp. "Mommy, look! Is that Daddy?"

Surprised, I turned around, only to meet Ambrose''s gaze directly.

He rushed over in just a few strides, grabbed my wrist, and then pulled me tightly into his arms.

"Giselle, I remember now! I remember everything—you''re my wife. Where are you going? Don''t leave. I forgot you before, and I''m sorry. I''ll make it up to you. Come back with me, okay?"

Alexis clung to me even tighter.

I could tell that she didn''t want to go back to that house. I forcefully broke free from Ambrose''s grip and looked at him calmly.

"Mr. Miller, you must be joking. Am I not just your nanny?"
